Visit Germany - The DON'Ts of Visiting Germany

Cultural Don'ts of Traveling to Germany

Knowing some cultural taboos is important to avoid offending locals when traveling to Germany. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Don't assume Germans are unfriendly or cold-hearted. They are accommodating and kind.

  • Don't jaywalk or cross against the light when the pedestrian signal is red.

  • Please don't dispose of bottles or large containers without taking them to a designated recycling area or returning them to the store for a deposit. Otherwise, you may face a fine.

  • Bring a small gift such as wine, flowers, or candy when visiting someone's home.

  • Take off your shoes inside the house to show respect.

  • Avoid taking duckface selfies at concentration camps or memorials.

  • Don't climb or jump on the stelae at the Holocaust memorial in Berlin.

  • Don't wait too long to order in restaurants, as Germans value efficiency.

  • Don't experiment on the autobahn, especially if you're uncomfortable with high speeds.

  • Please don't wait for the change or ask for it back when paying with cash. It's considered impolite.

Most of Germany is closed on Sundays except for museums and restaurants. If you want to shop on Sunday, do it on Friday or Saturday because a lot of stuff is completed.

Germany is not just a stereotype of half-timbered houses and beer halls. There's so much more to Germany than half-timbered houses. And there's a modern Germany in Bavaria or Munich. You can get that old Germany but also a very modern Germany as well. And my tenth don't for you is: realize that you don't just see half-timbered houses here. Don't forget to keep some euros with you so that you have them. Have your euros ready. And don't just try to think it's going to be half-timbered houses but experiment with all the wonders of Germany and the wonders here in Germany. I hope this helps you out of a better Germany.
