Travel Itinerary for Costa Rica

I will share my detailed travel itinerary in this video to help you have the best vacation in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is one of Central America's premier tourism destinations and a global leader in wildlife conservation. With over 28% of the country's protected land, it offers various attractions and activities.

Overview of Costa Rica

Costa Rica is between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, sharing borders with Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the southeast. The country is divided into seven provinces, with San Jose being the capital. It is roughly the same size as Denmark, covering 51,100 square kilometers. The population is around 5 million.

Choosing Your Destination

While all regions of Costa Rica are beautiful, the central and southern areas of the Pacific coast are particularly notable. If you only have one trip, I suggest focusing on these regions. The itinerary I will share in this video covers two-thirds of the Pacific coast, known for its stunning beauty and diverse wildlife.

Arriving in Costa Rica

Most likely, you will arrive at San Jose International Airport (SJO), located in Alajuela, near the capital city of San Jose. It is recommended to book flights that come in the early morning to maximize your vacation time. After landing, you can easily pick up your rental car from agencies near the airport. Just be cautious of potential fees for insurance, and make sure to have proof of coverage if you have it through your credit card.

Stocking Up in San Jose

While San Jose may not be a top tourist destination, it is an excellent place to stock up on groceries, snacks, and other essential supplies for your trip. There is a Walmart near the airport where you can buy everything before heading out on your adventure.

Playa Hermosa or Jaco

From San Jose, drive about two hours to Playa Hermosa or Jaco on Highway 27. Be cautious; the roads can be winding, and people drive aggressively. You can quickly stop at the famous crocodile bridge over the Rio Tarcoles. There are also hiking trails and waterfalls in Parque Nacional Carara. Playa Hermosa is known for its beautiful black sand and excellent surfing, while Jaco offers more amenities and surf schools for beginners.

Exploring the Southern Coast

After spending a few days in Playa Hermosa or Jaco, drive south along the Carretera 34 to the town of Dominical. This scenic drive offers breathtaking views of unspoiled beaches and forested mountains. You can visit attractions like the Rainmaker Hanging Bridges and Manuel Antonio National Park, known for its diverse wildlife.

Accommodation Recommendations

If you prefer a private beachfront experience, consider staying at Surf Inn Hermosa, where you can rent a beachfront apartment. Another option is Hotel Terraza del Pacifico. Both options offer great waves and stunning sunsets.

When traveling to Costa Rica, it is recommended to hire a local guide to help you spot hidden animals and support the local economy. In Dominical, you can enjoy yoga retreats, vegan dining options, and excellent surfing waves. Dominical is also surrounded by beautiful mountains with hiking trails and waterfalls. You can drive from Dominical to the Osa Peninsula, home to the biodiverse Corcovado National Park. The peninsula offers stunning beaches like Monta Palo and Drake's Bay, but caution should be taken as it is a wild area.

Further south, you can visit Pavones, known for its world-class left point break wave. The town is rustic and remote, offering a chance to disconnect. On your way back, don't miss the opportunity to relax in the hot springs of Volcano Arenal. Finally, end your trip to San Jose before catching your flight home.
